Cyrus Mistry, former chairman of Tata Son’s, dies in car crash accident near Palghar, Maharashtra.

Former chairman of Tata Group, Cyrus Mistry was killed in a road accident in Palghar near Mumbai on Sunday (04/09/2022). He was 54, currently chairman of Shapoorji Pallonji. Mistry was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in his black coloured Mercedes car.

“The accident took place around 3:15 PM, when Cyrus Mistry was returning to Mumbai from Gujarat's Udvada. The accident took place on a bridge over the Surya river near Chatori Area of Palghar, 135 kms from Mumbai. The car crashed into the road divider after Dr. Anahita Pandole lost control due to overspeeding. Cyrus Mistry died on the spot. It seems like an accident” Palghar district Superintendent of Police, Balasaheb Patil.

Pictures from the accident site showed the mangled remains of the black coloured Mercedes GLC 220d 4MATIC luxury car (MH-47-AB-6705). The impact of the collision was severe and the airbags in the vehicle had popped out, but failed to save the lives of the two. Eyewitnesses have said the car was trying to overtake another vehicle at high speed when it hit the road divider on a bridge across Surya river. After investigating into the car's traffic record it has revealed multiple traffic offences, including cases of jumping the red light and speeding. It is, however, not known who was driving at the time of these rules violation.

There were four people in the car when the accident happened. Along with Cyrus Mistry, Jehangir Pandole, Anahita Pandole and Darius Pandole were present in the car.

Dr. Anahita Pandole was at the wheel when the accident happened. Those injured identified as Anahita Pandole, a top gynecologists doctor at Breach Candy Hospital, and Darius Pandole, the managing director and CEO of JM Financial Private Equity have been shifted to a Rainbow hospital, Vapi, Gujarat which were then further airlifted to Mumbai for serious injuries. Dr Anahita Pandole and her husband Darius Pandole was on the front passenger seat. Cyrus Mistry and Jehangir Binshah Pandole, the brother of Darius Pandole, were in the rear seat of the car. Cyrus Mistry died on the spot. Locals who brought them to hospital informed Jahangir Pandol was alive on the spot, however, he died during the transit. Officials declared him dead around 5 pm. The body of Cyrus Mistry and another deceased person Jahangir Binshah Pandole was been shifted to the JJ. Hosipital, near Kasa Rural in Gujarat for preliminary postmortem on day of accident. Cyrus suffered severe head trauma that caused hemorrhage and had died instantly. The deceased also suffered chest and limbs trauma were his left leg was fractures. They sustains multiple injuries to vital internal organs. Body suffers from sudden shock when car halts from more than 100km/h to zero. The autopsy was concluded on 2:30 AM and body was kept in morgue. Viscera samples were further sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Kalina along with forensic report to check for traces of chemicals, alcohol, and poison, among others. Team has kept samples have been kept for DNA analysis too. Their family will collect the body before final rites on Tuesday. The accident has sparked a conversation on traffic safety as only very few wear seat belts in the backseat. In the examination has revealed Cyrus Mistry and Jehangir Pandole were not wearing seat belts. Airbags in vehicles are considered a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) - they work only in conjunction with seat belts. Luxury car-maker Mercedes Benz India was cooperating with authorities in the investigation. Their team has collected the vehicle's data which will be decoded for further analysis and submit their report to the government. Officials said - "We are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Cyrus Mistry and Jehangir Pandole in the unfortunate road accident. At the same time, we are glad to learn that Anahita Pandole and Darius Pandole are recovering. We wish them a speedy recovery. As a responsible brand respecting customer privacy, our team is cooperating with the authorities where possible, and we will provide any clarifications to them directly as required." The luxury company was committed to equipping its vehicles with the latest safety features and plans to increase road safety awareness. A 7 - member forensic team form by Maharashtra Police and the state transport department concluded that the car had been over-speeding. The car safety features had done their job. The front airbags were deployed as the seat beat were worn. Rear occupants didn't were the seatbelts as there were no scuff or abrasion marks found on the body. So they were thrown off their seat at high speed which caused fatal injuries. There was also an infrastructure issue that led to the crash. The bridge parapet wall was found to be protruding into the road. The design has been found to be faulty. The team also noted the presence of "blind spots" at various places on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway and stated that the subject has been placed before the Blind Spot Eradication Committee. Efforts are also being made by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to eliminate these blind spots.

He is survived by his wife and two children. One of Mistry’s close family friends said that Mistry’s family members were abroad for a function. This is the latest blow for the Mistry family whose patriarch, Pallonji Mistry - Cyrus's father - died in June at the age of 93. Their empire built luxury hotels, stadiums, palaces, factories and Landmark like Bombay Stock Exchange.

Death of former chairman of Tata Sons shocks the nation and Parsi Community.

Cyrus Mistry came to prominence when he was chosen to lead the Tata Sons after Ratan Tata stepped down in 2012. He was made the chairman on the basis of his representation from Shapoorji Pallonji Group, the largest shareholder in the Tata Sons. He was the sixth chairman of Tata Sons.

He joined the Board of Tata Sons in 2006 after his father Pallonji Mistry, a construction tycoon and chairman of Shapoorji Pallonji Group retired.

October 24, 2016, the board of Tata Sons (the group’s holding company) voted to remove Mistry from the post of Chairman and is still considered as India's most high-profile boardroom coup.

Sodawaterwala Agiary Restored To Its Former Glory by Donor's Magnanimity

The J D Amaria (Sodawaterwala) Agiary, at Marine Lines in Mumbai, was in need of urgent repairs and restoration for a while. Plants were seen growing from the walls, causing big cracks. Heavy leakage had corroded the beams and windows were broken. The interiors were gloomy with peeling paint, plaster failings at places and columns with cracks. A few years ago, the Trustees put out an appeal for funds to renovate the Agiary, but the response was insufficient to undertake any major repair.

In 2020, through the good offices of Karyesh Patel, the Agiary received a substantial donation of Rs. 38 lakhs from munificent donor Mrs. Soonu Buhariwalla. She had lost her beloved husband, Hoshang, in July 2020, and had started donating to many institutions and causes, in his memory. After hearing from Karyesh Patel and Anahita Desai, a Trustee of the Agiary, about the condition of the Agiary and how the trustees were trying to raise funds for a long time, Mrs. Buhariwalla decided to donate towards the repair of the Agiary. Initially, she made a donation of Rs. 30,000/ - and soon upped it to a phenomenal Rs. 38 lakhs, that allowed for the Agiary to be fully repaired and restored! The Trustees received a further Rs. 15 lakhs from Mr. Jal Sethna, through WZO, and these donations collectively enabled the Trustees to restore the Agiary to its former glory!

On the salgreh of the Sodawaterwalla Agiary (Farvandin Roj , Farvandin Mah) the transformed Agiary was inaugurated by principal donor - Mrs. Soonu Buhariwall a, in the presence of the Trustees, the Panthaki and a few devotees, after a celebratory jashan performed by Er. Pervez Karanjia and his son, Arzan. Jal Sethna was unfortunately unable to attend due to ill health . On the auspicious occasion, Mrs. Buhariwalla donated a gold chain with a diamond and ruby pendant saheb's picture.

The entire restoration work was executed by contractor Khushru Sukhadia, who faced various unforeseen challenges during the repairs, but he handled it very efficiently with practical, affordable solutions.

The Trustees of the Agiary - Dinshaw Variava, Capt. Percy Master, Anahita Desai, Aspi Sarkari, Limji Nanabhoy and Burzis Taraporevala were actively involved through the entire renovation process.

Dinshaw Variava, Capt Master and Anahita Desai in particular, frequently met with Khushru Sukhadia at the Agiary, to ensure perfect execution, along with Karyesh Patel, who represented Mrs. Soonu Buhariwatla.
